The status of Dak Prescott’s contract discussions with the Dallas Cowboys has been reported As the NFL season approaches, Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys face a deadline to reach an agreement on a new contract, but one major stumbling block remains.

The deadline for Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys to sign a new contract before the 2024 NFL season approaches. The two sides are allegedly in talks, but time is running out for a contract if Jerry Jones and his team want the talented quarterback to avoid free agency in 2025.

As negotiations continue, we are understanding what is causing the holdup in contract discussions. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on her Scoop City podcast that the length of a prospective deal is causing a delay in conversations.

“The holdup at this point, from what I understand, is about how many years the Dallas Cowboys are willing to commit to,” she stated during the debate, which starts at 8:07. Prescott is looking for a long-term commitment from the organization, while Dallas is pondering whether to keep him “longer than two, three, four years.”

She added, “He’s hoping for a long-term commitment from Dallas. So the holdup here is essentially the Dallas Cowboys’ belief. This is a guy who has won many games. But is this enough? Winning isn’t enough for Jerry Jones.

We are aware of this. They want to accomplish more than just win games. They want to be the club that can compete in the Super Bowl.

Prescott is betting on himself as he enters the 2024 NFL season, his final year of contract. He has a no-trade, no-tag clause, which means that if no deal is struck, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

That implies difficulty for the Cowboys, who will have to compete in a bidding war to re-sign Prescott. If a trade is not completed before the season, the price will only rise. And Prescott, who was the NFL MVP runner-up last year, understands he has complete control.

Prescott had one of his best seasons to date. He passed for 4,516 yards, an NFL-high 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Prescott was named second-team All-Pro and qualified for his third Pro Bowl appearance. Prescott is on track to become the league’s highest-paid player.

The question is whether this will be with the Cowboys or another team. Dallas will face the Cleveland Browns on the road on Sunday, September 8, to begin the 2024 season. Tom Brady will make his FOX broadcasting debut.
