The Cowboys begin the regular season on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. The team needs everyone to make an impact and get off to a good start. DeMarvion Overshown, a player on the Cowboys defense, has had to wait a little longer than others. In a recent ESPN article, he was named a “NFL X factor.”
The former Texas Longhorns standout didn’t have the immediate impact many expected as a rookie, but now that he’s healthy, expectations are high once more. In an ESPN story, Ben Solak stated, “New defensive coordinator (and former Vikings head coach) Mike Zimmer has historically used linebacker-sized linebackers to make his defense work.” Overshown began his career as a safety while playing for Texas in college. He then moved to linebacker. He is the right type of person that Mike Zimmer loves to have on his defense.
Cowboys fans aren’t the only ones who see what Overshown can bring to the table. He has the potential to be the team’s best linebacker, and most likely will be. I believe Eric Kendricks will be that guy for another year, but Overshown is not far behind.
Being younger is also a plus.
He Has The Right Mindset
DeMarvion knows that when the game begins on Sunday, it will be the moment in his life that he has been waiting for. “I feel great,” Overshown stated this week. “Just making it to the season healthy is a plus, so we’re already doing better than last year.” We saw how the linebacker core looked last season without Overshown, and adding Kendricks this year should not make it any worse than it was last year. “I felt great even going into the last [preseason] week,” said the coach. “It was just making sure I was healthy enough for Week 1 and making sure there were no bumps or bruises, or something that could’ve been avoided.”
Having the right mindset is the first plan of attack, the next will be whether he trust that knee to be able to be the best he can be.
Most of the time, that is the biggest hurdle. Getting your mind to trust the injured knee.
Tough Test To Start
With how the Cowboys have started the season, they will need every bit of both sides of the ball. They play the Browns in Week One and the Ravens in Week Three. They will need to get both stops and touchdowns. Field goals will not win you either of these games. The goal for this defense will be to halt the run. They did everything they could at the end of August to strengthen the defensive line with Jordan Phillips and Linval Joseph. Both are older, but with a nucleus of younger players in Overshown, Marist Liufau, and Micah Parsons, they might be fine.
This team is going to have a great, crazy year. Many people predict they will miss the playoffs. Some predict that they will finish third in the division, trailing the Washington Commanders. It’s funny to me that Dak Prescott has a 32-8 record against the division since joining the Cowboys. He will again sweep everyone but the Eagles. They’ll split. That’s five wins right there. This team will likely end with 11 victories.
