After the top wide receiver skipped practice, the Dallas Cowboys finally signed CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, $136 million contract. The question of why it took so long to sign one of their best players is addressed by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones as the club prepares for Week 1 of the season.
While appearing on the Stephen A. Smith program, Jones covered a wide range of subjects. One of them was the contract with Lamb, while others had to do with the Cowboys and managing other contracts, such as those involving quarterbacks Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons. The owner acknowledged that since Lamb had to be on the field regardless of the extension he received, he did not feel any sense of urgency.
To put it plainly, Jones stated, “We are wondering if I had the same assessment of CeeDee Lamb because I was a little slow in people’s opinion about getting him on paper.” Did you notice how much he wrote after he was on paper? That same slow individual is now the one who signed and scribbled that number on the paper. We never had any doubts regarding CeeDee Lamb’s ability as a football player or his potential to essentially benefit our club.
Jones went on, “I am not trying to be cute, but I do not see any rewards or penalties on your timer.” When he enters the field, is
Following CeeDee Lamb, Jerry Jones suggests the Cowboys’ next move.
After receiving constant criticism for holding up contract talks with his players, Jones was able to finalize one with Lamb, who has become one of the league’s best receivers. Lamb had a season-long total of 135 receptions for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Cowboys and Prescott, who is requesting a contract extension but looks like he will not get one before the season, are the subject of the greatest drama since the Lamb contract. By the conclusion of the season, he will become a free agent. Jones discussed potential future contracts, bringing up Parsons and the idea of a “young offensive lineman,” but he did not address Prescott.
“I understand the sentiments of fans, both those who support and those who oppose the Cowboys,” Jones remarked. And while I want to look as wonderful as everyone else, it was crucial that we make every effort to provide as many resources as possible to Lamb. We should not have married for $1,000, $50,000, or $100,000 because that would have been far more than what our system required of us to pay Parsons, or the young offensive lineman whose contract we want to extend in three years.
