Even though the San Francisco 49ers lost the deal that sent Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday due to a roster change, the team was still victorious in the draft.

The 49ers executive office believed three years ago that there was a rare chance to select their quarterback of the future in the 2021 NFL Draft. But in order to move up to the third slot and select Trey Lance of North Dakota State, the organization had to forfeit two more first-round selections, as they held the 12th overall pick in the first round.

The gifted young quarterback was not rushed by the organization. and for the most of his rookie year, let him sit and learn. However, they took a risk in 2022 by benching longtime starter Jimmy Garoppolo and selecting the former first-round pick as their quarterback.

Unfortunately, an injury in Week 3 ended his season after two disappointing starts. Ultimately, Brock Purdy, a rookie, emerged victorious in the playoffs and at the end of the season after an incredible run. It rendered him unnecessary.

He was therefore sent to the Dallas Cowboys prior to the trade deadline in 2023, having spent the first half of the season on the bench.

It was believed that the Cowboys would gain from the 49ers’ defeat. And the idea was that, should Dak Prescott decide to leave in free agency after this season, the 24-year-old could be developed further under coaching. Nevertheless, such dreams seemed like a pipe dream this week due to a significant decision.

The 49ers appeared astute for acquiring a fourth-round pick for him in November, as well. Prior to Week 1, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy disclosed yesterday who would be the team’s backup quarterback. To many’s surprise, undrafted Dallas veteran Cooper Rush will be selected instead of Lance.

Rush has played for the Cowboys for six years, and in 2022 he was a reliable replacement for Prescott. Even though Rush was able to secure the backup position before the previous first-round pick, the 49ers still emerged victorious from their deal with Dallas.
