Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones recently commented on the status of contract discussions with linebacker Micah Parsons, revealing that negotiations for an extension are not currently underway.
This comes in the wake of a recent extension agreement with quarterback Dak Prescott, which Jones had hinted at being close to finalizing just days before the official announcement.
Speaking on 105.3 The Fan, Jones clarified that any contract extension for Parsons is not on the table at the moment. According to The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Jones explained that Parsons chose to focus on having a standout season before entering into negotiations. Jones noted,
“Micah made a conscientious decision that he thinks he can put together an even better year. I think he got off to a great start yesterday against the Browns. I think his play speaks louder than words.”
Jones expressed confidence in Parsons’ potential to achieve his best season yet under the guidance of new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
He suggested that Parsons is currently focused on maximizing his performance this year and might be more open to discussing an extension later. “I think he expects to have a great year under (Cowboys DC Mike Zimmer). And then probably feel comfortable to talk about it then,” Jones added.
He also acknowledged that every player’s approach to contract negotiations is unique, stating, “Opportunities come, and when they are, and the player feels good about something. Then, we’ll certainly move to do something. At the same time, sometimes players just aren’t ready yet. They don’t feel like their situation is in the right situation to start the process.”
I don’t think there’s a single person in the world gappier about this deal than me lol. Permanent purgatory for the Cowgirls giving 240 million to a good but not great qb who you know doesn’t have what it takes in big games.

Parsons, now in his fourth NFL season, demonstrated his impact on the field in the Cowboys’ recent 33-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns, recording four tackles and one sack. His strong start reflects his ambition to further elevate his game this season.
Meanwhile, Cowboys owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones also spoke highly of Parsons in an interview with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. Reflecting on Parsons’ selection as the 12th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Jerry Jones emphasized the linebacker’s exceptional athleticism and unique talent. “Micah Parsons is probably the best athlete that I’ve ever been around,” he told Smith, underscoring both Parsons’ abilities as a player and his importance to the Cowboys organization.
Jones, who took personal pride in selecting Parsons, expressed his admiration for the player’s versatility and character. “He’s so unique, he’s multifaceted… He is very special and he’s one of my picks,” he said. Jones jokingly added that although others like Stephen Jones and Will McClay have made significant draft choices for the team, Parsons stands out as his personal favorite, highlighting his pride in the selection.
As the Cowboys look ahead to the rest of the season, both Stephen and Jerry Jones appear optimistic about Parsons’ continued development and potential for greatness. While the timeline for contract talks remains uncertain, the organization seems prepared to wait until Parsons feels ready to begin the negotiation process.
