The Dallas Cowboys are in the middle of their 2024 season, but they are still being encouraged to acquire a running back from the Houston Texans. In their approach to the RB group, Dallas is combining the old and the modern, and Dameon Pierce would bring something fresh to the table.

Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott will front the Cowboys’ rushing attack. Together, they ran for 66 yards, averaging 3.6 yards per carry, against the skilled Cleveland Browns defense. That is as mediocre a performance as they come.

For this reason, Cody Warren, a writer for Inside the Star, thinks the Cowboys ought to go for Pierce. Warren believes it will not hurt to recruit another quality running back, even though Dallas does have Dalvin Cook ready to make his debut.

Despite having an outstanding rookie season in 2022, the former Florida Gator has lost popularity and is currently behind Joe Mixon in Houston. The huge kicker is that Pierce is likely still on a rookie contract and available for a low price.

The trade may be completed by the Cowboys front office with little draft capital lost. The front office’s requirements for players are met by the affordable contract. It would be great to have a young guy that could step up the offense and make the opposition rethink their strategy. Although it is a fresh notion to give our present running backs an opportunity to show themselves, improving the position would benefit everyone, Warren wrote on September 13.

Pierce Has a Great Start in Houston But Fades Quickly

Though Pierce was undoubtedly a gifted player coming out of Florida, Texans supporters would have been hard-pressed to find a better rookie year than the RB’s 2022 campaign. Pro Football Reference reports that Pierce finished the season with 939 yards of total ground gain and five touchdowns.

But in 2023, his usage changed significantly. His playing time as a starter was impacted by an injury, but Devin Singletary’s ascent through the Houston offense also had a significant impact. With 145 carries, Pierce gained 416 running yards and two touchdowns.

Although Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has taken the offense to a new level, Pierce does not appear to be a key component of their strategy. Only three handoffs were given to Pierce in Houston’s Week 1 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Dalvin Cook is headed to the Cowboys.

The Cowboys have not seen what Cook is capable of yet, which has to be the largest criticism of Warren’s proposal. The four-time Pro Bowler’s arrival date has not been disclosed by Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, but he has stated that this week and next are crucial for his preparation.

McCarthy stated, “I am glad he is here,” according to Lonstarlive.com. Outstanding. Amazing feet. I have had a lot of opportunity to observe him. He has a great appearance. He blends in with the space quite nicely. .. Considering his schedule and duration of stay, I believe the most important thing is that ideally we can complete a full week’s worth of work this week and the following week. That will only lead to

Cook is coming off of two unsuccessful stints in 2023 with the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets. This is the eighth NFL season for the former Florida State standout.
