The Dallas Cowboys have had a shaky start this season, sitting at 3-3 and holding third place in the NFC East.
They haven’t won a home game yet but have secured victories in all three road games. Their next two matchups are also away from home.
Fans are pointing fingers as to why the Cowboys have underperformed. Some, perhaps rightly, criticize owner and general manager Jerry Jones for not assembling a roster capable of contending for a championship. Others place the blame on head coach Mike McCarthy for his game-day management.
McCarthy is a key figure to watch this season, as he is in the final year of his contract. The Cowboys didn’t extend his deal before the season began, leading many to speculate that his return is contingent on how the team performs.
Six-Time Super Bowl-Winning Coach Bill Belichick Praises Mike McCarthy
As some may know, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has taken on several media roles, including a Sirius XM radio show. During his show this week, he commented on the Cowboys’ struggles.
While many fans and perhaps some executives blame McCarthy for the team’s issues, Belichick disagrees. He considers McCarthy one of the top coaches in the NFL:
“Yes, it’s certainly a tough situation in Dallas, and I’m sure ownership is frustrated, not just by this season’s start, but also by how last season ended. It’s difficult.
They had a great year last year but had a poor playoff showing against Green Bay. They started this season well in Cleveland, but things have been rocky since.
“Stephen and Jerry Jones have spent a lot on high-profile players and given the team plenty of resources to win, but the results haven’t been there.
I’ve always said Mike McCarthy is one of the best coaches in the league. Mike Zimmer is a top defensive coach, and Bones is excellent on special teams.
“Still, it’s not coming together for some reason. There’s a long season ahead. Something has to change. I don’t know enough about the internal dynamics, but I believe everyone—players, coaches—needs to step up.”
Belichick doesn’t blame McCarthy or his staff for the team’s struggles. Interestingly, he notes the Jones family has made efforts to invest in top players, but the results simply haven’t followed.
This season, however, it’s clear why their investments haven’t paid off.
Dallas Cowboys Misled Their Fans
The Cowboys haven’t reached the NFC Championship Game since the mid-1990s, leaving their fanbase eager for a title. Understandably, patience is wearing thin.
Though Dallas made significant moves to extend Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb this offseason, they also let several key players walk. To replace them, Jones signed lower-tier veterans and drafted younger players needing development.
In essence, the team is undergoing a partial rebuild. But rather than admitting it, Jones assured fans that he was “all-in.”
His decision to sign Ezekiel Elliott instead of Derrick Henry, who joined the Ravens for just $8 million a year, is one decision that has left fans baffled. It was questionable at the time, and it remains so now.
Regardless of Jones’ defense of his personnel choices, the reality is they haven’t been enough.
