The Dallas Cowboys are being discussed as a possible trade destination for Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett.

The Dallas Cowboys roster appears to have several weaknesses, sparking NFL trade rumors around The Star. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has tried to downplay the idea that the team will make a significant mid-season move.

Dallas has until Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (also Election Day), to decide on making a trade. One name being suggested in trade discussions is Cleveland Browns superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett. Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay proposed a trade scenario in which the Cowboys acquire Garrett.

The major deal involves Dallas giving up four future draft picks for the five-time Pro Bowler. Dallas would send two first-rounders (2025, 2026) and two third-rounders (2025, 2026) to Cleveland for Garrett.

“Trading for Myles Garrett—a Dallas native who wanted his hometown team to trade up for him in 2017—won’t fix all the Cowboys’ problems, but he’d certainly address most of their defensive struggles,” Kay wrote in an October 22 article, “4 NFL Trades That Browns Couldn’t Turn Down for Myles Garrett.”

“Garrett is not only the type of star Dallas ownership loves to pursue, but he’s also the kind of generational talent who could put this team back on track to compete for championships.”

Let’s look at whether this blockbuster trade proposal for Garrett makes sense for the Cowboys.

Potential Cowboys Trade Target Myles Garrett Has Recorded 6 Straight Double-Digit Sack Seasons in Cleveland

It’s important to note that Dallas doesn’t seem like a team on the verge of making a major move. The Cowboys seem to be focused on contract extensions for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb as their “major moves” for 2024.

Dallas mostly stayed quiet during the 2024 offseason, making no big additions. However, Garrett’s fit with the Cowboys could still be appealing.

The team is dealing with injuries to key pass rushers Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence. Garrett is one of the NFL’s top pass rushers, recording six straight seasons with double-digit sacks.

In 2023, Garrett recorded 42 tackles, 30 quarterback hits, 17 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles in 16 games. So far in 2024, through seven games, he has 17 tackles, 9 quarterback hits, 7 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.

Garrett’s five-year, $125 million contract runs through 2026. His $20.1 million cap hit this season could pose a challenge for the budget-conscious Cowboys.

With the Browns at 1-6, it’s possible the team will consider trades for some of their stars, including Garrett. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes the Cleveland front office will field many trade inquiries about Garrett.

“Given their 1–6 record and the recent trade of Cooper, the Browns will start getting calls,” Breer noted in an October 21 story, “Week 7 NFL Takeaways: Jared Goff Is an MVP Candidate.” “I don’t think they’ll trade Myles Garrett (though there’s been some interest), Denzel Ward, or Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. But players like Za’Darius Smith or Jack Conklin could draw offers and be more realistic trade targets.”

The Cowboys remain an unlikely destination for Garrett due to the high draft capital required and his expensive contract.
