Following the Dallas Cowboys’ 47-9 defeat to the Detroit Lions, leaving them at a 3-3 record, rumors have emerged suggesting head coach Mike McCarthy might be replaced by a legendary figure.
Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported that “many around the league believe Dallas could be a top destination” for former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick this offseason.
Schultz also noted that “multiple sources” confirmed Belichick has a “strong relationship” with the Jones family.
Belichick is working as an analyst in 2024 after being unexpectedly left without a coaching position following his split from the Patriots after 23 seasons.
McCarthy, the Cowboys’ head coach since 2020, has achieved three consecutive 12-5 regular-season records but has faced playoff struggles, failing to advance beyond the Divisional Round. Last year, Dallas was upset by the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers, 48-32, at AT&T Stadium.
Including that playoff loss, Dallas has now lost four consecutive home games, following a previous 16-game home win streak, the second-longest in team history.
“We never expected or prepared for this outcome, especially at home,” said quarterback Dak Prescott after the defeat. “We’ve now dropped three here, where we’ve usually been solid.”
The Cowboys enter a bye in Week 7 before returning on Oct. 27 for a Sunday Night Football game against the San Francisco 49ers. If results don’t improve soon, McCarthy’s tenure could end before his contract does.
