Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson confirmed that “Trevor Lawrence Watch” continues for another week as they prepare to face the Detroit Lions on November 17.
Pederson stated that there is no definitive update on Lawrence’s availability after he missed the Jaguars’ 12-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Lawrence is nursing a left shoulder sprain, which affects his non-throwing shoulder, leaving his status for the game in doubt. Pederson noted the team would know more following Wednesday’s practice.
Pederson further clarified that there is currently no need for Lawrence to undergo surgery. Despite some speculation, he dismissed any consideration of a surgical procedure, emphasizing that no discussions have happened on that front. For now, the team is focused on tracking Lawrence’s recovery, with no immediate plans for season-ending measures. Pederson aimed to reassure fans about the injury’s severity, indicating that a long-term solution like surgery isn’t necessary.
With Lawrence’s status still uncertain, the Jaguars are reviewing backup options, especially after Mac Jones struggled in relief during the Vikings game. Jones completed only 14 of 22 passes for 111 yards, threw two interceptions, fumbled once, and took three sacks. Consequently, the Jaguars signed C.J. Beathard from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. Beathard, a former Jaguar, could step in if Lawrence remains unavailable, though Pederson refrained from naming Beathard as a starter without further updates on Lawrence.
BPederson expressed confidence in Beathard’s readiness, highlighting that he prepares as if he’s playing each week. Though Pederson didn’t commit to Beathard starting against Detroit, he assured that Beathard would be fully prepared to play if needed. The Jaguars are focusing on flexibility, with Beathard as an alternative if Jones continues to struggle.
Alongside quarterback concerns, the Jaguars are also monitoring offensive guard Ezra Cleveland’s status, who’s recovering from an ankle injury. Pederson indicated Cleveland might return to limited practice on Wednesday. Additionally, running back Tank Bigsby also had an ankle issue in the Vikings game but returned to play. Pederson reassured that Bigsby’s injury was minor, and the team remains optimistic about their key players’ availability for the Lions matchup.
