The Dallas Cowboys have had one of the NFL’s top slot corners in recent years, thanks to the play of their current starter. This player, who endured a difficult period under former secondary coach Kris Richard, has since evolved into a reliable contributor. Now in a one-year deal, he is set to become a free agent again this offseason. If the Cowboys don’t re-sign him, there is speculation that the team could target another veteran cornerback to fill the void, with Mike Hilton emerging as a potential target for the Cowboys in 2025.

Hilton, currently playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, has had an impressive career as a slot corner, showcasing a mix of ball skills, physicality, and quick reactions. Through eight games this season, Hilton has played 67% of the Bengals’ defensive snaps, allowing a mere 69.3 passer rating against him when targeted. His consistent ability to shut down receivers in the slot has earned him a reputation as one of the more underrated defenders in the league.

In addition to his coverage skills, Hilton has proven valuable as a playmaker in other areas of the defense. Since the start of last season, he has registered 16 tackles for loss and has two sacks in 2023. His ability to pressure the quarterback and disrupt offensive schemes, despite being undersized for his position, makes him a versatile asset for any defense.

For the Cowboys, cornerback is an area to watch heading into the 2025 season. While Trevon Diggs is locked in with a long-term contract and DaRon Bland still has another year on his rookie deal, slot cornerback remains a question mark. Diggs is recovering from an ACL injury that caused him to miss most of the 2023 season, and Bland has struggled with his own injury issues in 2024. As a result, adding a proven veteran like Hilton could be an appealing option for Dallas.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has suggested that Hilton could be a prime target for the Cowboys if they decide not to re-sign their current slot corner. With the need for veteran leadership in the slot and Hilton’s skill set, Dallas may look to bring him on board for the 2025 season. His ability to make plays in both coverage and as a disruptor could help solidify the Cowboys’ defensive backfield as they move forward.
