There were plenty of rumors last offseason suggesting that McCarthy might be fired after the Cowboys’ crushing home playoff defeat to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round, but the franchise opted to give him another year.

It seems highly unlikely that the 61-year-old head coach will remain on the Cowboys sideline in 2025, and given Jerry Jones’ track record, he’s likely to make a bold move in hiring a new head coach.

This week, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Dan Lanning, head coach of Oregon, has been a name circulating in NFL circles as a potential candidate for the 2025 head coaching cycle.

Lanning, who is only in his third season at Oregon, is a rising star in the coaching world. He’s cultivating a winning culture with the Ducks, so there’s a strong chance he stays. However, if he doesn’t, the Cowboys could be the team to land him.

Dan Lanning Could Be Bound for the Dallas Cowboys

Scott Barrett from Fantasy Points shared his predictions for 2025 NFL head coaching hires on X, and he has the Cowboys hiring Lanning.

Seeing Lanning in Dallas would be exciting, and the Cowboys should do everything possible to secure the 38-year-old coach.

Lanning has proven himself as a winner and has coached under Nick Saban and Kirby Smart, meaning the Cowboys would be getting a coach who knows how to win consistently.

It’s unfortunate that college football could lose such a talented coach, but watching him in Dallas would certainly be an exciting experience.
