Cooper Rush has struggled in his recent starts as the Cowboys’ quarterback, leading some to suggest that Trey Lance should be given a shot at the top spot. However, owner and GM Jerry Jones remains committed to Rush, insisting that the veteran gives the team the “best chance” to win. Jones expressed doubts about Lance starting, stating, “I want to give our team the very best chance it can — in all phases — to be successful,” emphasizing that Rush remains the preferred option.
Since taking over for an injured Dak Prescott in Week 9, Rush has completed 58 of 103 passes (56.31%) for 514 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The Cowboys have lost all three games during that stretch, and the offense has struggled to score, managing just two touchdowns. While Rush stepped up last year and led the Cowboys to a 4-1 record as a fill-in for Prescott, his career completion rate remains under 60%, with a modest 10/6 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and he offers little on the ground. As a result, it seems unlikely he can replicate that success in 2024.
Trey Lance, who was acquired in a trade for a fourth-round pick, has had limited playing time since joining the Cowboys, appearing in only one regular season game. In his most recent appearance, Lance completed four of six passes but also threw an interception. Despite his high potential, the coaching staff hasn’t seen enough from Lance in practice to elevate him to the starting role.
Lance will remain the backup for now, though head coach Mike McCarthy revealed that the team has a special package designed for him. This package could be used as early as this Sunday’s game against the Commanders, offering a glimpse into how Lance might be utilized moving forward.
