The Dallas Cowboys were active on Wednesday with multiple roster moves, particularly focusing on strengthening their defensive backfield. The team made several changes in response to injury issues affecting their cornerbacks. These adjustments come after the team placed cornerbacks Josh Butler and Caelen Carson on injured reserve earlier in the day.
Butler, who had been playing a key role in the Cowboys’ defense, is now lost for the season due to a knee injury. Meanwhile, Carson, a rookie, has also been sidelined due to a shoulder injury, preventing him from making his mark in his first year with the team.
With both players headed to injured reserve, the Cowboys moved quickly to bolster their cornerback depth by signing two veteran players to their practice squad. These additions are seen as necessary to fill the gaps left by Butler and Carson’s injuries.
The first veteran signed by the Cowboys is Dee Delaney, an undrafted free agent out of Miami in 2018. Delaney has accumulated three career interceptions across 52 games. He played all 17 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in both 2022 and 2023, showcasing his reliability and experience in the league.
The second player added to the practice squad is Troy Pride, a 2020 fourth-round draft pick who previously starred at Notre Dame. Despite being drafted highly, Pride has only appeared in 15 career games, and his opportunities in the NFL have been limited thus far.
Although neither Delaney nor Pride is expected to contribute immediately, their signing addresses the Cowboys’ need for depth at a position that has been plagued by injuries this season. Both players bring experience, which could prove valuable for the team as they look to maintain their competitiveness throughout the remainder of the year.
The Cowboys are hoping that these veteran cornerbacks will provide stability and support if their number is called later in the season. With their defensive backfield under strain, Dallas is making sure they have options available to weather any further injuries.
