The Dallas Cowboys have acquired wide receiver Jonathan Mingo in a trade with the Carolina Panthers. In exchange, the Cowboys are sending a 2025 fourth-round pick to Carolina, along with receiving a 2025 seventh-round pick. This trade also involves the release of cornerback Andrew Booth, who was acquired earlier this year during training camp in Oxnard.
Mingo, selected by the Panthers as the 39th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has played in 24 career games, catching 55 passes for 539 yards. However, he has yet to score his first NFL touchdown. The 6’2″, 220-pound receiver brings size and potential to the Cowboys’ receiving corps and still has two years remaining on his rookie contract after the 2024 season.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mentioned earlier on his weekly radio show that the team was likely to acquire a wide receiver they had previously liked coming out of college. The acquisition of Mingo fits that expectation, with Jones noting the team was excited to bring him in for a fresh start in Dallas.
Before entering the NFL, Mingo played four seasons at Ole Miss, recording 112 receptions for 1,758 yards and 12 touchdowns. He earned second-team All-SEC honors in his senior season and showcased his athleticism at the NFL Combine, where he ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash, posted a 39.5-inch vertical jump, and a 10’9″ broad jump.
This trade marks the second consecutive year the Cowboys have sent a fourth-round pick for a young, developmental player. Last year, Dallas traded their fourth-round pick to San Francisco to acquire quarterback Trey Lance. While Lance has not yet appeared in a regular season game for the Cowboys, there is a possibility that he could play soon, as starting quarterback Dak Prescott is likely headed to injured reserve, according to Jones.
Jones has emphasized that the Cowboys are focused on building a roster to compete in 2024, despite the recent loss to Atlanta. He reiterated this message during his radio appearance, making it clear that the team is in “buying” mode and not “selling” players.
With this move, the Cowboys are hoping Mingo can add depth and playmaking potential to their receiving group, which has faced challenges this season. Jones remains committed to making moves that will strengthen the roster and give the team a better chance to contend for a championship this year.
