There has been speculation that the Dallas Cowboys could part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after this season, prompting discussions about potential replacements. As the offseason approaches, several names have emerged, but one that stands out is Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.
In a December 12 article for The Landry Hat, Jerry Trotta highlights Johnson as his top choice to replace McCarthy. Johnson was a highly sought-after candidate during the last coaching cycle, interviewing with several teams and almost joining the Washington Commanders before opting to stay in Detroit. Heading into Week 15, the Lions’ offense ranks first in points per game (32.1) and second in total yards per game (394.8), underscoring Johnson’s effectiveness. Trotta refers to him as one of the best play-callers in the NFL, alongside names like Andy Reid, Kyle Shanahan, and Sean McVay. Johnson’s ability to turn Jared Goff into an MVP contender demonstrates his skill in developing quarterbacks, and Trotta believes he could achieve similar success with Dak Prescott. While Johnson lacks head coaching experience, his offensive prowess might make him a compelling candidate for the Cowboys, especially after investing heavily in Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.
Another name being mentioned as a potential Cowboys candidate is Mike Vrabel, former head coach of the Tennessee Titans. NFL insider Jeremy Fowler notes that Vrabel could be a fit for Dallas due to his experience and track record. Vrabel posted a 54-45 record with the Titans, leading them to three playoff appearances and AFC South titles in 2020 and 2021. Though the Cowboys’ head coaching situation remains uncertain, the team is currently focused on their upcoming game against the Panthers.
