Recent news about the Dallas Cowboys has largely focused on the team’s upcoming head coaching decision, which Jerry Jones is expected to announce within the next week.

Whether the choice will be current offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, Eagles’ OC Kellen Moore, or a surprising new option like former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, the topic will undoubtedly continue to dominate headlines.

However, there is concerning news regarding a key player on the Cowboys’ defense.

Trevon Diggs Facing Extended Time on the Sidelines

Trevon Diggs suffered a significant knee injury last month, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season before the Week 15 game against the Carolina Panthers.

While the injury is severe and will require time to heal, the situation may be even worse for both Diggs and the Cowboys, based on the latest updates from ESPN’s NFL writer for the Cowboys, Todd Archer.

Recovering from such a serious injury will obviously take time. However, losing a key player like Diggs, who is a two-time Pro Bowler and made First Team All-Pro in 2021, would be a significant blow to a team that needs its top players on the field as it enters a new era under a new coach.

Impact on the Cowboys’ Defense

In 2024, the Cowboys’ passing defense ranked 18th in yards allowed, despite having one of the strongest cornerback tandems in the league in DaRon Bland and Diggs, both of whom have made the First Team All-Pro.

With Diggs locked into a five-year, $97 million contract signed in 2023, the secondary is anything but inexpensive.

It seems that Diggs has been plagued by misfortune—signing his big deal in the 2023 offseason only to suffer a devastating knee injury, tearing his ACL in September 2023 and now dealing with another significant setback just over a year later.

With training camp now at risk, the Cowboys are likely concerned that their top cornerback may not be ready for the start of the 2025 season. Additionally, with Jourdan Lewis, the team’s long-time slot corner, set to hit free agency this March, the Cowboys will need to plan carefully for their secondary over the next nine months.

Archer did offer a more optimistic update, stating that the timing of the surgery itself wasn’t a major concern.

Still, Cowboys fans won’t be happy with the possibility of missing their best defensive player, after game-changing linebacker Micah Parsons, at the start of the 2025 season.
