Jerry Jones and Deion Sanders Played a Media Game with Fake Cowboys Rumors
Deion Sanders and Jerry Jones managed to trick some people, but most caught on to their antics just as the Cowboys rumors started circulating | Tim Heitman-
Jerry Jones was never truly considering Deion Sanders for the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach role. Similarly, Coach Prime likely never intended to make the jump to the NFL either.
Jones dismissed the rumors on Monday, confirming that all the media coverage was a waste of time.
“Although Jones and Sanders briefly discussed the job, and Sanders was at one point favored, he never had an official interview. Jones clarified on Monday that, despite he and his son expressing admiration for Sanders, he was never a serious contender,” reported Yahoo Sports’ Ryan Young.
It seems Jones misled the media down a fruitless path, while Sanders likely used the Cowboys’ interest to secure more money from Colorado.
Jones got what he wanted. The Cowboys’ search initially centered around Coach Prime, distracting from an internal hire. While Brian Schottenheimer isn’t widely praised, many fans would have opposed Deion even more. So, Jones achieved his goal.
But Sanders didn’t. There’s still no extension as promised, and Coach Prime isn’t receiving the support needed to compete nationally, beyond what might turn out to be a lucky nine-win 2024 season with two top-five NFL draft prospects.
It’s unclear what Sanders will do if Colorado doesn’t meet his compensation demands. He’s ruled out the NFL and has coaching terms that most universities can’t accept.
What’s clear is that KOA Colorado’s Benjamin Allbright and The Landry Hat’s Jerry Trotta both saw through Jones and Sanders for masterminding this deception.
