Cowboys Add Massive QB Prospect to Roster as Training Camp Opens
The Dallas Cowboys already have their starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, secured, with Joe Milton and Will Grier competing for the backup role. However, a new face is set to join the quarterback room — at least temporarily.
As training camp gets underway at The Star in Frisco, the Cowboys will bring in a fourth quarterback to help with reps. While Prescott is still recovering from surgery to repair a torn hamstring, he’s expected to participate in some capacity during upcoming Organized Team Activities (OTAs).
After trading for strong-armed prospect Joe Milton and parting ways with Trey Lance (now with the Chargers), Dallas seems prepared to let Milton and veteran journeyman Will Grier battle for the No. 2 spot, especially with Cooper Rush having signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
This weekend, though, the Cowboys will also be taking a look at Donovan Smith, the former University of Houston quarterback, as reported by ESPN. Smith is not signed to the team but will be present at rookie minicamp as a tryout player — often called a “camp arm.”
Smith started his college career at Texas Tech before transferring to Houston. His final season wasn’t particularly strong statistically, with four touchdown passes and eight interceptions across nine games. However, what he lacks in numbers, he makes up for in physical attributes.
At 6-foot-6 and 238 pounds, Smith is a physically imposing presence — comparable in build to Milton. He’s also athletic, having clocked a 4.63-second 40-yard dash and boasting a 37-inch vertical leap, which could make him a versatile option in the quarterback room, even if only temporarily.
