Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is keeping his options open as the team deals with another major blow to its offensive line. With starting guard Christian Mahogany suffering a serious leg injury during the Week 9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Campbell acknowledged that the Lions are exploring trade possibilities ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline.

Mahogany was carted off the field after the injury, forcing Kayode Awosika, a former undrafted player, to step in for the remainder of the game. While Awosika held his own in limited snaps, Detroit is reportedly searching for a more experienced addition to reinforce its depth in the trenches.

Speaking on the Costa & Jansen with Heather radio show, Campbell confirmed that the front office has been active in evaluating trade options. “We’ve looked there, for sure,” he said, per team insider Jeremy Reisman.

The Lions later announced that Mahogany sustained a broken ankle and will be sidelined for an extended period. Although there’s optimism he could return before the end of December, Detroit plans to start Awosika when they take on the Washington Commanders in Week 10.

Detroit drafted Miles Frazier in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft to bolster its offensive line depth. The rookie was viewed as a high-upside developmental player, but he’s spent most of the season inactive and hasn’t yet cracked the rotation.

Detroit’s Offensive Line Depth Being Tested

Once recognized as one of the most reliable offensive fronts in the league, the Lions are now dealing with a series of injuries that have tested their depth throughout the 2025 season.

The issues began in the offseason when center Frank Ragnow announced his retirement and veteran guard Kevin Zeitler departed for the Tennessee Titans in free agency. Detroit responded by drafting Tate Ratledge and Frazier, hoping Mahogany would take a big step forward in his second year.

While the group performed admirably early in the season, durability has become a serious concern midway through the campaign. Both Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker have been battling injuries and appearing on weekly injury reports, while reserves Giovanni Manu, Justin Herron, and Jamarco Jones remain on injured reserve.

Despite Sewell and Decker’s efforts to play through pain, Detroit’s offensive line stability is hanging by a thread. What was once the team’s greatest strength is now a pressing concern, and Campbell’s openness about a possible trade signals that the Lions could soon make a move to keep their playoff hopes intact.
