The Detroit Lions continue to fine-tune their roster as they push deeper into the 2025 NFL season. On Monday, the team made another change in their secondary, officially releasing veteran defensive back Kendall Fuller from the practice squad.
Fuller, a seasoned defensive back and former Super Bowl champion, joined Detroit just a few weeks ago to provide depth to a unit that had been hit hard by injuries. The Lions’ secondary had been scrambling for reinforcements with Avonte Maddox, Terrion Arnold, and D.J. Reed all sidelined at various points due to injuries. Fuller’s addition was meant to bring stability and veteran leadership while the team navigated that stretch.
At 30 years old, Fuller brought plenty of experience to Detroit. Over his career, he has suited up for the Washington Commanders, Kansas City Chiefs, and Miami Dolphins. His most notable success came during his stint with the Chiefs, where he helped the team capture a Super Bowl title. In 2024 with Miami, Fuller appeared in 11 games and contributed 50 tackles along with seven pass breakups, showing that he still had solid playmaking ability left in him.
However, Detroit’s defensive situation has since improved. Reports indicate that Terrion Arnold is set to return to practice this week and could be available for the Lions’ upcoming NFC North showdown against the Minnesota Vikings. With several key defenders nearing full health, the Lions’ front office no longer needed the veteran safety net that Fuller provided.
While his time in Motown was short-lived, Fuller’s signing underscored Detroit’s proactive approach to maintaining depth and flexibility across its defense. Head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes have made it clear that they won’t hesitate to make roster adjustments to ensure the team stays competitive through the long grind of the season.
As the Lions prepare for a critical stretch that could determine their playoff positioning, the defense appears poised to regain its early-season form. Fuller now becomes a free agent, and given his experience and track record, it wouldn’t be surprising to see another team bring him aboard soon.
