During a busy free agency period, the Lions made moves to create financial flexibility and address roster needs. While head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have been proactive, not all decisions have been well-received by analysts. Some key losses could prove difficult to overcome.

Lions Criticized for Letting Key Players Walk

After falling short in 2024 and suffering a playoff loss to the Washington Commanders on January 18, Detroit is looking to retool for another postseason push. However, some of their early free agency departures have drawn scrutiny.

In a March 14 article for A to Z Sports, NFL analyst Mike Payton highlighted both positive and questionable moves from the Lions’ first week of free agency.

One of the most significant losses, according to Payton, is guard Kevin Zeitler. He argues that keeping Zeitler was crucial for maintaining a strong offensive line, but Detroit was unable to retain him. Though Zeitler’s decision was influenced by personal reasons, Payton suggests the Lions could have increased their offer. As a result, he grades the move an “F.” Zeitler has since joined the Tennessee Titans in what is being considered an underrated acquisition.

Another departure that raised concerns was edge rusher Za’Darius Smith. Payton graded this move a “D,” questioning the decision to free up cap space without immediately reinvesting it. He acknowledges that the move might look different over time but remains skeptical about the immediate impact.

Positive Additions Provide Hope

Despite some questionable losses, Detroit also made noteworthy acquisitions. The signing of cornerback D.J. Reed received high praise from Payton, who gave the move an “A.” He applauded general manager Brad Holmes for securing Reed on a $48 million deal after losing Carlton Davis to the Patriots for $60 million. Reed, who played 46 games for the New York Jets, has consistently posted strong coverage grades and should provide value at a lower cost.

Payton also praised the Lions for re-signing defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, giving the move an “A+.” Onwuzurike had a strong 2024 season, and the Lions managed to bring him back at a price significantly below projections, which Payton described as a major win for the team.

While Detroit has taken some hits in free agency, key additions could still position them for success in 2025.
