By moving money about in quarterback Jared Goff’s contract, the Detroit Lions have freed up cap space for the 2026 offseason.
As the Lions start the offseason with a negative salary cap position, general manager Brad Holmes is compelled to move money about in order to recruit Detroit players in free agency this year. By shifting funds about in Goff’s contract, the general manager has made the decision to do so.
Goff’s revised contract will have a cap hit of $37. 6 million, whereas it was initially expected to have a cap hit of $69. 6 million in 2026. This gives the Lions an additional $32 million to spend in the offseason.
$40 million of Goff’s signing pay was transformed into a signing bonus by the squad.
The Lions’ salary cap predicament may mean that Goff’s contract renegotiation is just the first of several actions the team may make this year.
The Lions now have more room under the cap, allowing them to either participate in the external free agent market or spend the money to keep some of their own players.
The Lions have found Goff’s career resurgence to be a revelation, having first acquired him from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade that sent Matt Stafford elsewhere. Following a challenging debut season, Goff has recovered and produced four straight exceptional seasons.
Goff has made three Pro Bowl appearances during his tenure in Detroit, and he came in fifth in the MVP poll in 2024. The following year, he turned around and assisted the club in earning the top seed and a 15-2 record after guiding the squad to the NFC Championship game in 2023.
Even though the Lions ended the 2025 season with a 9-8 record and came in last in the NFC North, there is still reason to be optimistic about Goff’s potential to lead the Lions back into contention starting in 2026.
Overall, Goff has started 82 games for the Lions over five years. He has 47 interceptions, 149 touchdowns, and 21,451 passing yards. He is now second in several franchise records, including passing yards and passing touchdowns, behind Stafford.
The Lions have mostly concentrated on rebuilding their offense around Goff during free agency thus far. After trading away David Montgomery, they signed a couple of offensive linemen in center Cade Mays and offensive tackle Larry Borom, and they also brought in a running back in Isiah Pacheco.
Additionally, after Kyle Allen agreed to a two-year contract with the Buffalo Bills, Teddy Bridgewater has returned to Detroit to serve as Goff’s backup.
