The Detroit Lions have spent big money this offseason to ensure their foundation remains intact. Yet, one of their cornerstone stars remains without a new deal.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the organization and Aidan Hutchinson’s representatives have engaged in encouraging conversations regarding an extension. Still, sources suggest a contract resolution won’t be finalized before the season opener.
Schefter noted on X, “The Lions and Hutchinson have had positive contract discussions, but no agreement is expected before the season officially begins today.”
Detroit will open its campaign on the road against the Green Bay Packers in what promises to be a high-stakes NFC North clash.
Since being drafted second overall out of Michigan in 2022, Hutchinson has quickly cemented himself as one of the league’s premier defenders. He enters the fourth season of his five-year rookie deal. Last year, the pass-rusher was firmly in the Defensive Player of the Year race before a leg injury sidelined him late in the season.
The Lions have already taken care of business with several other key players. This offseason, the team secured extensions for Jameson Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jared Goff, Alim McNeill, Kerby Joseph, Penei Sewell, and Taylor Decker.
Detroit’s front office has emphasized continuity, aiming to keep its youthful, talented roster together for the long haul. Given Hutchinson’s value to the franchise and the strong relationship between both sides, an agreement appears to be more of a “when” than an “if.”
