Jermar Jefferson’s strong efforts during training camp and the preseason won him a berth on the Detroit Lions practice squad.

The Lions have added the former Oregon State Beavers’ standout running back to their practice squad, a day after he was removed from their 53-player roster. The Lions also added former Beavers defensive tackle Kyle Peko to their practice squad.

Jefferson, who scored two touchdowns in the Lions’ 24-17 preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, had 38 yards on 14 carries.

The Lions’ seventh-round choice (No. 257) in the 2021 NFL draft has exhibited vision and explosiveness on the field, although it is possible that improved pass protection aided him this year.

Jefferson, who hasn’t played in a regular-season game since his rookie year, will have another chance to be promoted to the active roster during the season.

Peko, 31, signed a free-agent contract with the Lions in May but did not play in any preseason games. He started 10 games for the Tennessee Titans in 2023 and has participated in 42 games (12 starts) since signing with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2016.
