Lions fans are still celebrating Sunday night’s win over the Rams, and the excitement is amplified by a new Lions hype song titled “All Grit,” designed to resonate deeply with fans.
The song’s creator, John Legardy, was inspired to write it after hearing a particular beat that sparked his imagination.
On the eve of the Lions’ season opener, Legardy decided to compose a fight song dedicated to his hometown team. He explained that he chose to create a rap song because it allowed him to express a lot about the city, the fans, and the team. “I’ve got so much to talk about, about our city, about our fans, about our team,” Legardy noted, adding that this style felt more appropriate than a typical hype R&B song.
When asked by FOX 2 whether the song might be less of a rap and more of a love letter to Detroit and the Lions, Legardy agreed wholeheartedly. He likened the Lions to a “blueprint” of Detroit, representing hard work and a blue-collar spirit. This theme is evident in the song’s lyrics, which repeatedly mention “All Grit,” capturing the essence of the team’s mentality and work ethic.
Before releasing the song publicly, Legardy shared it with one of his toughest critics—retired FOX 2 reporter Al Allen. Allen’s positive reaction affirmed Legardy’s confidence in the song, as he had a feeling it would resonate with the longtime reporter.

Legardy’s use of “All Grit” in the song is not just a tribute to the Lions’ tough-minded approach but also a nod to head coach Dan Campbell. Legardy has been a fan of Campbell long before he became a well-known figure. His connection to Campbell is personal; his nephew, Dion Sims, a Michigan native who played for Michigan State, was drafted by the Dolphins when Campbell was the team’s tight ends coach. This family link created a bond with Campbell that has endured.
Looking ahead, if the Lions reach the Super Bowl and win, Legardy is ready to expand his musical efforts, with enough material for an entire album that would cross genres—from rap to country and pop. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more from this passionate Detroit artist.
