The Detroit Lions are excited about their fourth-round draft pick, Sione Vaki, and his potential as a running back. Vaki, who previously played safety for the Utah Utes, made a significant impact when he transitioned to running back during the 2023 season.

In his first game in this role, he recorded 158 yards and two touchdowns, finishing the season with impressive stats: 317 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and 203 receiving yards with three touchdowns.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes highlighted Vaki’s natural instincts and field vision, noting how well he adapted to his new position despite limited experience. Holmes initially viewed him as a safety but was captivated by his performance as a runner, prompting the team to explore his offensive capabilities further.

Vaki’s versatility is a major asset, as he has experience at multiple positions, including running back, wide receiver, and defensive back. The Lions plan to utilize him primarily as a running back, complementing their current depth chart, which features established starters Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

His determination and work ethic stand out, with Vaki expressing his commitment to giving his all for the team. As he focuses on honing his skills as a running back, the Lions are optimistic about unlocking his full potential, hoping he can become a valuable asset both on offense and special teams.

Sione Vaki Named as Detroit Lions Most Important RolePlayer by ESPN

Just recently, ESPN came out with an analysis that highlighted every team’s important role player. According Eric Woodyard, Vaki is that guy for the Lions.

“Detroit’s backfield is one of the best in the league with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, but Vaki brings a unique skill set and adds value on special teams. Vaki played safety in college but was drafted as a running back. He showcased his pass-catching ability by being on the receiving end of a fake punt against the Bucs.

“We loved him for special teams based on his college tape, but he’s been able to translate that physicality that he’s shown on special teams to that position, so he’s not afraid to come downhill on a linebacker,” offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said,” Woodyard wrote.

With a solid preseason behind him, Vaki is poised to make a meaningful contribution, and his readiness to embrace different roles will be crucial for the team’s dynamic. The upcoming games will highlight his ability to leverage his skills effectively, helping to solidify his position within the lineup.

As Vaki continues to develop, his contributions could significantly influence the team’s success this season, making him a player to watch. The anticipation for his performance is high, and he looks to make a lasting impression on both teammates and fans alike.
