Lamar Jackson had a standout performance for the Baltimore Ravens, leading them to a crucial first win of the NFL season against the Dallas Cowboys. However, he ended the game with a controversial joke that upset fans.
The Baltimore Ravens, after losing their first two games, took a commanding 28-6 lead at AT&T Stadium, with running back Derrick Henry scoring two touchdowns. However, after a fourth-quarter collapse against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2, the Ravens allowed 19 unanswered points as Dak Prescott and the Cowboys cut the lead to just three.
Jackson, a two-time NFL MVP, made key plays to run out the clock, first connecting with Zay Flowers for a first down and then sealing the game with a nine-yard run to move the chains.
After the game, Jackson spoke to FOX’s Tom Rinaldi and made a crude joke about the Ravens’ tendency to lose leads late, suggesting players and coaches were on “suicide watch.”
Jackson said: “Man, the game isn’t over until the clock says zero. I didn’t like how it ended. We should’ve scored more and kept our foot on the gas when we were up 28-6. But we got the win, and we’ll regroup on Tuesday.”
He added, “We needed this badly. I think some people were on suicide watch. But we got the win and need to keep going.”
While some, including Rinaldi, found it humorous, Jackson faced backlash from fans online. One wrote: “Did Lamar Jackson really say people are on suicide watch over football? That’s not funny. Both Lamar and the media person should be ashamed. Suicide is a serious issue, and you don’t know what someone may be going through.”
