The Detroit Lions’ Sunday game against the Arizona Cardinals had a long list of injuries, so many that it was not even worth updating during the game or providing more details afterwards. Marcus Davenport, an edge rusher, left the game for a little while but soon came back.

None of the news, though, seems to be awful.

On Monday afternoon, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Davenport had sustained a serious elbow injury. Depending on the findings of more tests, he might miss the entire season.

Rapoport tweeted on Monday, “#Lions pass-rusher Marcus Davenport appears to have suffered a serious and significant elbow injury in Sunday’s game, sources say.” “Davenport might be out for the season after trying to play again while wearing a sleeve. More testing is currently being done on him.

The play Davenport was hurt on was rather obvious, as noted by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press and photographed by Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit. He tries to break free from a block and falls to the ground gripping his arm, but he gets back into the game wearing a sleeve.Paris Johnson, the left tackle for the Cardinals, does a nasty move that we can see in more detail thanks to an end zone view. His arm was severed from the end zone perspective, as you can see:

Davenport, who missed Week 2 due to a groin issue, ended up playing 40 plays on Sunday.
Marcus Davenport’s addition increases the Lions’ chance of injuries.

Sadly, injuries have played a major role in Davenport’s career, keeping him from realizing his full potential and earning a first-round selection in 2018. Due to an ankle injury, he missed all but four of the Minnesota Vikings’ games last season. He has never played more than 500 snaps in a season. When the Lions signed Davenport to a one-year, $6.5 million contract in March, with a total of $850,000 attached to per-game active bonuses ($50,000 each week), they were taking a calculated risk to improve their edge rusher position. He missed Week 2 following an excellent performance in Week 1. Now, before September ends, he might be out for the 2024 season, pending more information and confirmation from the organization.
