Bleacher Report has identified a weakness in the Detroit Lions’ secondary, suggesting that trading for cornerback Kaiir Elam could be a smart move.

Although the Detroit Lions have had a solid defensive start to the season, some still point to potential weaknesses that may cause problems later.

Detroit’s overhauled secondary has performed well so far as they continue to come together. After three weeks, the Lions are ranked 14th in pass defense (216.7 yards per game) and have allowed three passing touchdowns.

These stats are enough for at least one analyst to recommend an additional defensive piece.

In a Week 4 evaluation of team needs, Bleacher Report suggested the Lions should trade for Buffalo Bills cornerback Kaiir Elam.

“Cornerback has been an issue for the Lions since last season, and it remains one of the team’s biggest flaws. Meanwhile, B/R’s Kristopher Knox named Elam as a trade candidate in the NFL Trade Block Big Board column.”

“The third-year player may not be the proven player Detroit is looking for, mainly because he’s been behind Christian Benford. But the 2022 first-round pick has enough talent to potentially contribute right away and be a long-term solution.”

The 23rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Elam has had a slow start, with 56 tackles, two interceptions, and four passes defended in two years. Injuries, like an ankle issue in 2023, and falling out of favor with Buffalo’s coaching staff have hindered him. However, he does have two postseason interceptions.

The Lions could offer Elam a fresh opportunity, though it’s uncertain if he would make a significant immediate impact. Giving up assets for him may not be the wisest decision for Detroit.

Dan Campbell pleased with defensive showing against Arizona Cardinals

Currently, the Lions may not feel the need for an urgent trade as their secondary has performed decently this season. Following a strong showing in Arizona, Campbell expressed satisfaction with his defense’s effort against a tough opponent.

“(The) defense really closed out the game for us with that (strong) mentality. We won the run battle 188 to their 77. Only gave up 13 points defensively, 1-9 on third down. Two sudden change stops, only four explosive (plays). Kirby (Joseph) and Carlton Davis played great. (Aidan) Hutchinson and (DJ) Reader did as well. Reader is a force, Hutchinson relentless, and (Brian) Branch made plays too.”

Three of the five players Campbell highlighted were from the secondary, demonstrating the unit’s growth. In a Tuesday appearance on 97.1 The Ticket, Campbell further praised the secondary’s improvement.

Detroit’s secondary appears to be holding up well. A cornerback addition doesn’t seem necessary unless a major injury occurs, despite ongoing speculation.
