The Detroit Lions are expected to finish the 2024 NFL season without SAM linebacker Derrick Barnes.

Dan Campbell shared disappointing news this week, stating that it would be fortunate if the fourth-year linebacker returned at all this season.

Following the release of veteran linebacker Devin White by the Philadelphia Eagles, fans urged the Lions to sign the former SEC star.

During his college career, White was praised for his big-game performances, sacks, interceptions, and tackles for loss while playing at LSU.

Pre-draft evaluations highlighted his coverage abilities against tight ends, receivers, and running backs, along with his high football intelligence.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected White fifth overall in 2019, considering him one of the most well-rounded linebackers to enter the draft in years.

White earned a Pro Bowl spot in 2021, but his performance has declined in recent seasons. He was also a member of the Buccaneers’ 2021 Super Bowl-winning team.

However, issues with coaching adaptability, consistency, and tackling led the Buccaneers to decline his fifth-year option.

White joined the Eagles this offseason but has been inactive for their first four games.

USA Today’s LionsWire stated, “Absolutely not on Devin White for the Lions. Detroit doesn’t need a fast, inconsistent linebacker who struggles with tackling and blitzing. Who would you replace to bring him in? More importantly, who do you think Brad and Dan would drop for him?”

With Detroit’s coaching staff expressing confidence in their linebacker depth, it would be surprising if the team decided to sign the 26-year-old at this point.
