Former Alabama safety Brian Branch is emerging as an elite All-Pro defender in his second NFL season, playing a pivotal role in the Detroit Lions’ defense.

Branch has just completed his best two-game performance, recording three interceptions and defending four passes in wins over the Vikings and Cowboys. Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered high praise on Tuesday.

“By the time it’s all over, you’ll look back and say, that guy was a game changer,” Campbell said. “What’s remarkable is how much room he still has to improve. He’s special.”

Branch, who turned 23 on Tuesday, told reporters he’s in one of the best rhythms of his career after Sunday’s win. “I finally feel like I’m playing like I did in high school,” he said.

Branch surprisingly dropped to the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and that decision now seems even more baffling. According to PFF, Branch is the NFL’s highest-graded safety and has played multiple positions for Detroit, including free safety, box safety, and slot.

The former Alabama standout could enter Defensive Player of the Year discussions by season’s end and is a strong contender for several honors this year. There’s no doubt the Lions have a special talent.
