The Detroit Lions are in search of a replacement for Aidan Hutchinson, and a “formidable” candidate may soon be available.
The Detroit Lions are preparing for the NFL’s November 5 trade deadline, aiming to find a defensive end to replace Hutchinson, who is sidelined for the season with a broken tibia.
While some fans dream of landing a big name like Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby, a solid, less-known player could also fit the role effectively.
Several NFL analysts suggest that the Lions should act quickly to sign a rising pass-rusher who has been performing well recently.
Detroit Lions ‘Should Be Interested’ in Promising Pass-Rusher
In an October 23 article titled “2024 NFL Trade Block Big Board Entering Week 8,” Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox identified New York Giants pass-rusher Azeez Ojulari as the top trade target. He also mentioned the Lions as a team that should consider acquiring him right away.
“Giants pass-rusher Azeez Ojulari stays at our top spot for the second straight week,” Knox noted. “New York may want to improve its offensive line to protect quarterback Daniel Jones, but with a 2-5 record, they should consider trading pending free agents like Ojulari.”
Knox added, “Detroit should naturally be interested in trading for Ojulari before the deadline.”
Other pass-rushers on Knox’s radar for the Lions include Chase Young of the New Orleans Saints and Za’Darius Smith of the Cleveland Browns.
In Bleacher Report’s October 21 scouting report, Ojulari was also named the top immediate trade option for Detroit.

In an October 23 article for Athlon Sports, NFL writer Doug Farrar also highlighted Ojulari as a strong candidate to replace Hutchinson.
“Ojulari may not rely heavily on power moves, but his technique and ability to exploit gaps are top-notch,” Farrar stated. “He reads gaps like a running back, and his quickness is a standout skill. Ojulari also excels at using his hands and arms to gain leverage against blockers, allowing him to break through to the pocket.”
Farrar added that Ojulari’s speed could make him a formidable addition, as he doesn’t need much schematic help to pressure the quarterback.
Farrar believes that the right Hutchinson replacement could push the Lions to new heights.
“If the Lions can secure the right pass rusher now, and if Hutchinson can return for a potential Super Bowl appearance, this team could be on track for its first NFL championship since 1957,” he wrote.
