The Detroit Lions are actively seeking ways to compensate for the loss of Aidan Hutchinson, their top pass rusher, who suffered a season-ending broken leg. His absence has left a significant gap in their defense.
Fortunately, Detroit has until the NFL trade deadline on November 5 to make a move. Chris Licata of Athlon Sports compiled a list of possible trade ideas, suggesting the Lions target another elite defensive player.
Replacing Hutchinson’s contributions is a major challenge, but Los Angeles Chargers star pass rusher Khalil Mack could be a viable option. The proposal involves the Lions trading 2025 fourth- and seventh-round picks to acquire Mack.
Mack, an eight-time Pro Bowler and 2016 Defensive Player of the Year, has a remarkable track record. He’s on a one-year, $19 million contract, with free agency in 2025. Currently, Mack has just 2.5 sacks for 2024, following a career-best 17 sacks last season.
“Yes, it’s a long shot, and cheaper options exist. But with Haason Reddick likely staying with the Jets, the Lions need a real impact player to fill Hutchinson’s role,” Licata wrote on October 24.
“After seven weeks, no Lions defender has more than 19 pressures, while Hutchinson had 45 in five games,” he added. “Mack, who leads the Chargers in pressures at age 33, remains a disruptive force fresh off back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons.”
