The Pittsburgh Steelers have thrived with quarterback Justin Fields, achieving a 4-2 record over the first six weeks. But they continued winning without him, beating the New York Jets in Week 7 after Fields was replaced by Russell Wilson.

Fields has publicly taken responsibility for his benching, admitting that better play could have secured his starting spot.

Despite this, Fields had delivered 10 combined touchdowns against just one interception over six games. In the final year of his rookie deal, he will become a free agent in March unless he signs an extension with Pittsburgh. Fields is eager to prove he deserves a multi-year deal in a 2025 free-agent market that may lack depth at quarterback.

Fields hinted at his desire to return to a starting role with a cryptic Instagram story post on Friday, Oct. 25.

The meaning of Fields’ post is unclear. He may be waiting for another opportunity in Pittsburgh if Wilson struggles or suffers an injury. Alternatively, he could be anticipating free agency, hoping to sign a one-year “prove-it” deal with another NFL team, similar to Sam Darnold’s move to the Minnesota Vikings last offseason.

There’s also a chance Fields is hoping for a team to reach out to the Steelers before the November 5 trade deadline.

Wilson, who started the season with a calf injury, now appears firmly set as Pittsburgh’s starter, assuming he stays healthy. The Steelers, currently 5-2 and strong AFC contenders, may want to keep Fields as a reliable backup given his success in their system.

However, Pittsburgh is reportedly exploring options for a new wide receiver in the next week and a half. Fields could be a trade asset to acquire one, allowing the Steelers to strengthen their roster without sacrificing significant 2025 draft picks.

Alternatively, Pittsburgh may seek a quarterback in next year’s draft to develop alongside Wilson. If so, trading Fields for a mid-round pick could help the Steelers acquire capital to move up for a promising rookie QB in the first round.
