Despite the thrill of last-second wins against the Texans and Jaguars, recent games have exposed some areas where the Packers need improvement.
After the excitement faded, players recognized that facing a strong opponent like the 6-1 Lions demands a more consistent offensive performance than they’ve shown.
Statistically, the Packers’ offense appears solid, ranking sixth in the NFL in points per game and scoring 24+ points in seven of eight games. Running back Josh Jacobs is fourth in rushing yards,
Jordan Love ranks high in touchdown passes, and Jayden Reed and Tucker Kraft have achieved impressive milestones. Yet, the offense has been plagued by failed drives, as seen in multiple three-and-outs and interceptions against the Texans and Jaguars.
Tucker Kraft stressed the need for more accountability on offense, especially early in games. Coach Matt LaFleur’s recent decision to take the ball after winning the coin toss has yet to pay off, as their offense has struggled to start strong. Love expressed his desire to kick off games with a perfect drive, though results have fallen short.
Late-game struggles are also a concern, as a recent three-and-out allowed the Jaguars to tie the game with under two minutes remaining. Elgton Jenkins emphasized the importance of dominating opponents and not relying on field goals to secure wins.
Whether Love will play against the Lions depends on his recovery from a groin injury. Even if Malik Willis starts, Jenkins stressed that the offensive line must create opportunities for Jacobs, who gained 127 yards last week despite tough defensive contact.
Jacobs noted there’s room for improvement and is motivated to continue progressing, though he’s nursing an ankle injury. Offensive line injuries are also a factor, with Jenkins, left tackle Rasheed Walker, and center Josh Myers all dealing with issues.
When Willis has started, the Packers leaned more on designed runs, significantly increasing their rushing average. Improving in the red zone and on critical downs would also help, as they rank low in touchdown conversions and third-down efficiency.
With the Lions’ recent high-scoring game, the Packers might need to deliver their best offensive performance of the season to keep up.
Love acknowledged the inconsistency has been frustrating, as mistakes and mental lapses have hindered their potential. He believes they have yet to play their best game and remain focused on achieving that goal.
