An NFL insider suggests the Lions may acquire an edge rusher before the trade deadline. With the deadline looming next Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, the Lions are expected to make a move to strengthen their edge-rushing capabilities in light of Aidan Hutchinson’s absence.
Earlier this week, head coach Dan Campbell teased fans by hinting that a trade “could be” imminent within 24 hours. However, the next day he tempered expectations, acknowledging that while possibilities are being explored, nothing is certain.
There remains a chance the Lions will pass on a trade, which would be disappointing given their clear need for an edge rusher.
On Thursday’s “Get Up” show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter was asked if he believes the Lions will acquire an edge rusher before the deadline. Not only does he think they will, but he even mentioned a couple of potential targets.
Adam Schefter mentions edge rushers Lions could target
“Yes, I do think you’re going to see that. You saw Dan Campbell excited; he looked like the cat that ate the canary. They don’t have a deal done yet, but a couple of pass rushers are available: Za’Darius Smith, Azeez Ojulari in New York.
These players make a lot of sense for the Lions, and if you’re close to competing, why wouldn’t you part with a mid-round pick to reinforce the defense while waiting for Hutchinson’s potential return if they reach the Super Bowl?”
Schefter’s comments weren’t a report but an informed opinion in response to a question. Smith has already been linked to the Lions in trade talks, and Ojulari, though less so, is another consideration.
Ojulari, who has six sacks and 19 pressures in eight games this season, is only 24 and could be a valuable long-term addition. Although he’s more of a SAM linebacker at 240 pounds, his impressive 82.5-inch wingspan counters that frame.
Schefter emphasized the Lions “don’t have a deal done yet,” but indications suggest they are actively pursuing options. The final decision could come down to selecting a specific target and closing the deal before Tuesday.
