As the trade deadline looms, the Cowboys bolster their backfield by adding a Super Bowl-winning running back.
The Dallas Cowboys have faced numerous challenges this season. Heading into Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons, they hold a 3-4 record.
The roster has multiple gaps, but the most significant one is at running back. Dallas ranks last in the league in rushing yards per game (74.1) and rushing touchdowns (3), averaging just 3.4 yards per carry.
The tandem of Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle hasn’t delivered. With the Nov. 5 trade deadline fast approaching, Dallas needs more backfield production. In a hypothetical trade scenario, the Cowboys acquire Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
In this projected deal, Dallas only surrenders a seventh-round pick to bring in a running back with Super Bowl credentials.
Edwards-Helaire is a versatile playmaker who could add spark to the Cowboys’ backfield. This season, he spent time on the NFI list due to PTSD, but he’s now back and could elevate Dallas’ offense.
The 25-year-old has accumulated 1,845 rushing yards, 765 receiving yards, and 19 total touchdowns. He would bring a new dynamic to the Cowboys’ backfield at a minimal cost, and acquiring a two-time Super Bowl winner could make a significant difference.
Dallas’s reunion with Elliott hasn’t met expectations, and they’ve sparingly used Dalvin Cook in 2024, indicating their lack of confidence in him. Making this move would be a smart decision.
