In NFL trade talks, certain teams tend to be more active than others, and the Carolina Panthers might join the action this year.
NFL insider Adam Schefter named Panthers receiver Diontae Johnson and Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith as potential trade candidates as the deadline approaches.
Teams have one game left before the Nov. 5 trade deadline.
Schefter mentioned these players while on the Pat McAfee Show.
“In my mind, Diontae Johnson will be traded by next week,” Schefter said. “It could be this week or next, but I expect Carolina and Johnson to go their separate ways. The question is where he’ll go, and I believe he’ll be traded.”
Panthers WR Diontae Johnson’s Season So Far
Despite quarterback issues, Johnson has posted 357 receiving yards and three touchdowns over six games—a solid performance considering rookie QB Bryce Young’s struggles. Young recently reclaimed the starting spot after Andy Dalton’s thumb injury. Johnson missed last week’s game due to a rib injury.
Johnson’s absence fueled trade speculation, and Panthers head coach Dave Canales didn’t deny it, per sports.yahoo.com.
“Dan [Morgan] and Brandt [Tilis] handle those talks,” Canales said. “I just want what’s best for Diontae, the offense, and our continuity. He couldn’t play this week, but I’m confident our other guys can step up.”
Johnson seemed likely to stay put recently
Canales had stated earlier, via espn.com, that he didn’t foresee Johnson leaving.
“I just want to put our best 11 guys out there,” Canales said. “We’re happy with our progress, so I don’t see it happening.”
Johnson also downplayed the rumors.
“I can’t control what they put out there,” Johnson said. “I’m focused on being the player I’ve been here. Whatever happens, happens, but I’m with the Panthers now.”
If traded, Johnson would join top receivers Davante Adams (Jets), DeAndre Hopkins (Chiefs), and Amari Cooper (Bills), who recently changed teams.
One place Johnson won’t go is back to the Steelers, per Schefter, as they aren’t interested in bringing him back.
Browns DE Za’Darius Smith a Potential Trade Option
Schefter expressed surprise that Smith hasn’t already been traded.
“We’re waiting for Cleveland to trade Za’Darius Smith,” Schefter said. “He’s one to watch for. We’re already seeing an active trade period with all the receiver movement.”
Smith has recorded five sacks and 22 tackles in eight games for the Browns. He’s two years removed from his Pro Bowl season, one of the best of his 10-year career, having posted 13.5 and 12.5 sacks in 2019 and 2020 with the Packers.
Though Smith may be on the move, the Browns are unlikely to trade their other defensive end, Myles Garrett, despite high interest from other teams.
