Following Brian Branch’s controversial ejection in the Detroit Lions’ game against the Green Bay Packers, head coach Dan Campbel spoke out in support of the young safety.
Branch faced criticism after a head-to-head hit penalty, and Campbell addressed the incident during an interview on 97.1 The Ticket.
Campbell’s View on Branch’s Playing Style
“I’m not concerned about that,” Campbell remarked regarding the criticism Branch faced. “I don’t understand why that would be an issue. He’s a football player, playing the way we want him to play. He needs to lower his target, that’s the key. He knows that.”
While Campbell recognized that Branch’s aggressive style is an asset, he acknowledged the need for adjustments to avoid penalties. He stressed the importance of player safety without compromising performance.
Impact of the Ejection
Campbell also discussed the aftermath of Branch’s ejection, particularly his reaction to the officials and crowd. “The main issue, man, was the penalty afterward,” Campbell explained. “That’s what we talked about—‘You can’t give them the 15 after that.’ Just lower the target and go through the sternum. He was a little too high.”
The situation escalated when Branch voiced his frustration with the officials, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that cost the Lions an extra 15 yards. This response was Campbell’s primary concern, as maintaining composure during such moments is essential for the team.
“He’ll be fine. He’s a great player, a great safety, and no, he’s not a dirty player,” Campbell added, reaffirming his support for Branch. His comments reflect confidence in Branch’s abilities and character, emphasizing the value of learning from the experience.
Moving forward, Branch will need to refine his technique while keeping the aggressive style that makes him a standout on the Lions’ defense. With Campbell’s support, Branch has the encouragement needed to recover and continue contributing to the Lions’ success this season.
