The Cincinnati Bengals have added former Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaiah Williams to their roster.
After being placed on waivers, the rookie wideout was claimed by the AFC North team, securing a spot on their 53-man roster.
Williams impressed Detroit’s coaching staff with his potential during training camp, though his role remained mostly limited to special teams due to the success of the offense.
Detroit initially signed the 23-year-old undrafted free agent this spring, and he continually demonstrated effort and progress during practices.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson mentioned recently that Williams often earned scout team player of the week recognition for his strong practice performances.
“That’s what makes coaching rewarding,” Johnson remarked. “While you’re focused on game prep, it’s enjoyable to see the scout team players standing out.
Williams has been that standout every week on the scout team and has earned the scout team player of the week award multiple times from coach (Aaron) Glenn and the defensive staff.
“You see the speed and explosiveness he showed in the preseason carrying over into practice consistently,” Johnson continued. “Trust in him is building, and if he’s active this week, we’re gaining more confidence in his abilities.”
