The Cowboys took a tough loss on Sunday, falling 34-6 to the Eagles, which dropped their record to 3-6. With this, Dallas became the first NFL team to trail by 20 or more points in five consecutive home games.
After the game, owner Jerry Jones was questioned about Mike McCarthy’s future in Dallas. The veteran owner stated that he is reluctant to make an in-season coaching change because of past regrets.
Jones wasn’t the only one asked about McCarthy’s job status in postgame interviews. Linebacker Micah Parsons, returning to the lineup after missing four games due to an ankle injury, also addressed McCarthy’s future.
Here’s what Parsons said about McCarthy’s time with the Cowboys.
What did Micah Parsons say about Mike McCarthy?
McCarthy is in the final year of the five-year deal he signed when he took over as Dallas’ head coach in 2020. He and the team’s management didn’t reach an agreement on an extension before the season started.
Parsons was interviewed after the game and initially asked about the team’s mindset while struggling in the season’s first half. He replied that he and his teammates must be a “light in the darkness,” emphasizing that no matter how bad things seem, they need to stay positive and push forward.
It was apparent that Parsons felt emotional and was considering the future of his teammates, as he’s also eligible for a new contract after the 2025 season.
Parsons was then asked if he had considered McCarthy’s future with the team and whether he thought his coach would return next season.
“Mike can leave and go anywhere he wants. I feel bad for guys like Zack Martin and those who might be on their last year or close to leaving. That’s who I want to hold the trophy with. You want to win and accomplish great things with legends who’ve invested more time and effort than McCarthy ever has. Those are the guys I feel deeply for.”
Parsons expressed these thoughts about his teammates in a somber tone, without any bitterness toward McCarthy. Still, his comment about players investing “more time and work than Mike McCarthy ever did” sounded intense. This might hint at underlying issues that could be causing tension in the locker room.
You can watch Parsons’ interview here, with his response to the McCarthy question starting around the 19:40 mark.
Micah Parsons stats
The loss to a division rival was tough for the Cowboys. In a game where positives are scarce, Parsons stood out as one of the few.
He finished with just two tackles, but both were sacks, and he forced a fumble. Although it was his first game back, it was arguably his best performance this season in terms of stats.
