Former NFL player faces felony charges in connection with the January 6th insurrection.

The FBI has arrested former Detroit Lions draft pick Antwione Williams in connection with the January 6th Capitol riots, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol. Williams, who was waived by the Lions in 2017 after a brief NFL career, now faces two felony charges, including assault, for his role in the chaotic events that unfolded that day.

Identified Through Social Media

Williams was identified by the FBI through a thorough investigation that included cross-referencing his social media activity. Special agents matched images from his social media accounts with footage from the riot, where Williams was seen wearing a similar outfit to that worn during the insurrection attempt. This identification links him directly to the mob of rioters who stormed the Capitol in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Brief NFL Career, Long Fallout

Williams’ arrest comes nearly five years after he was waived by the Detroit Lions. The linebacker had a short-lived NFL career, playing only one season with the team in 2016. After his release, Williams faded from the public spotlight, but his recent arrest has thrust him back into the news in a much more troubling light. This marks the first arrest connected to the January 6th Capitol riot involving a former NFL player since the election of President Joe Biden.

As the case against Williams develops, questions about the role of athletes in political movements and their involvement in events such as the Capitol riot are sure to spark conversation, as the fallout from January 6th continues to ripple through American society.
