TheDetroit Lions are aiming for a Super Bowl appearance in 2024, with their current 8-1 record putting them in a strong position to secure the NFC’s No. 1 seed. However, the team faces a significant challenge without their star defensive player, Aidan Hutchinson, for the remainder of the regular season. Despite this setback, Lions legend Barry Sanders believes that this is the year for the franchise to seize its Super Bowl opportunity.

In a recent appearance on the Get Got Pod with Marshawn Lynch, Sanders emphasized the importance of winning the Super Bowl this season. He stressed that nothing in the NFL is guaranteed, highlighting the team’s progress over the past few years. Sanders reflected on how the Lions have slowly but steadily built their roster, improving both offensively and defensively. He also mentioned the heartbreak of being knocked out of playoff contention in 2021 but praised their NFC Championship appearance the following season.

For Sanders, the Lions’ current window of opportunity is now. He pointed out that with each passing year, the team has come closer to contention, and 2024 is their best chance to break through and win it all. The Lions are currently among the favorites to win the Super Bowl, with the second-best odds (+460) behind only the Kansas City Chiefs (+430), according to FanDuel.

While the Lions are optimistic about their Super Bowl chances, they are devastated by Hutchinson’s injury. Sanders shared his concern, noting that Hutchinson has been the team’s best player and that his absence will be felt. However, he expressed confidence that Hutchinson would return soon, and emphasized that the Lions have been building toward this season for a long time.

To help fill the gap left by Hutchinson, the Lions made a significant move at the 2024 trade deadline by acquiring veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns. While Smith cannot replicate Hutchinson’s impact, his arrival gives the Lions a much-needed boost on the defensive line. Known for his leadership and ability to generate pressure, Smith will play an important role as the team looks to make a deep playoff run.

Smith’s addition to the defense is crucial as the Lions aim to continue their strong start to the season and make a Super Bowl push. His first game with the Lions will come in Week 11 against Jacksonville, providing an immediate test for the defense. The team hopes Smith’s presence will help maintain their defensive performance as they face the challenges ahead.

Looking forward, the Lions are determined to make the most of their current season. With the playoffs in sight and a Super Bowl within reach, Sanders believes that now is the time for Detroit to make history. As they prepare for the rest of the season, the Lions are focused on keeping their momentum going and taking full advantage of this rare

opportunity.
