Detroit Lions defensive end Za’Darius Smith has embraced a leadership role, both by contributing on the field and mentoring younger teammates like Aidan Hutchinson.
In a conversation with CBS-Detroit reporter Rachel Hopmayer, Smith discussed guiding Hutchinson in strengthening his role as a defensive team captain and improving team camaraderie.
Renowned for his leadership throughout his career, Smith offered Hutchinson advice on fostering team chemistry. “He likes to play cards. He is a card guy,” Smith shared, highlighting Hutchinson’s off-field personality. “All is love, man. Teaching him a couple of things with the camaraderie of the team. Some things to do.”
Smith reflected on his own experiences as a captain, emphasizing the importance of building team unity. He described hosting teammates for Thursday Night Football gatherings as a way to bond. “When I had the (captain) patch on, I invited guys over on Thursday nights. I’m just sprinkling that stuff on him, like, ‘Bro, this is your defense. You have to do this kind of stuff.’”
Hutchinson, already a standout defender in the NFL, is still finding his balance as both a player and a leader. Smith’s advice is pivotal as Hutchinson grows into his role. The veteran defender expressed confidence in Hutchinson’s potential.
“Obviously, he is still young,” Smith noted. “He’s going to grow as a player. Hopefully, I can be that light to help him grow as a player.”
After a leg injury earlier this season, there’s hope Hutchinson could return if the Lions make a deep postseason run. Reports suggest he might be ready for a potential Super Bowl appearance. Smith’s mentorship positions Hutchinson to excel both on and off the field.
