Detroit Lions Urged to Pursue $11 Million Linebacker to Replace Alex Anzalone

The Detroit Lions’ defense has taken a hit with the injury to Alex Anzalone, who is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season due to a broken wrist. Anzalone played a crucial role in the Lions’ defense, and his absence leaves a significant void. As the team looks for ways to fill that gap, some analysts are recommending that the Lions consider signing former Miami Dolphins linebacker David Long.

Why David Long Could Be the Right Replacement

One popular suggestion is to bring in David Long, who could provide a solid replacement for Anzalone’s role. Long was recently waived by the Dolphins in the final year of his two-year, $11 million contract after struggling to maintain his form with the team. Despite his release, Long brings a wealth of experience and skill that could strengthen the Lions’ defense.

Long started every game for the Dolphins in 2023 and six out of eight games in 2024 before falling out of favor. Drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2019 as a sixth-round pick, Long quickly made a name for himself with his hard-hitting, aggressive style of play, showcasing excellent sideline-to-sideline speed and an ability to pressure the quarterback. Though not known for his coverage abilities, his knack for defending the run and creating disruptions behind the line of scrimmage would complement the Lions’ defensive style.

A Fresh Start for David Long

Long’s release from Miami was influenced by several factors, including a hamstring injury and a decline in his run defense, which led to a loss of his starting role. Despite these setbacks, his talent and physicality remain valuable assets, making him a potentially strong fit for the Lions. Analysts like Kyle Crabbs suggest that a change of environment could reignite Long’s career, noting that his aggressive approach might be better suited to Detroit’s defensive culture, which emphasizes toughness and high energy.

With the Lions riding a strong season under head coach Dan Campbell, Long could benefit from joining a team with a winning mentality. A fresh start in Detroit might provide the motivation and system Long needs to rediscover his best form.

Strengthening the Defense

The Lions have one of the league’s top defenses this season, and adding a player like David Long could further elevate their play. While Long has his flaws, such as inconsistent coverage skills, his speed, physicality, and experience as a starter could make him an impactful addition. General manager Brad Holmes could see signing Long as an opportunity to provide depth to the linebacker corps and keep the defense competitive while Anzalone is sidelined.

Though the Lions remain in a strong position to contend for the top NFC playoff spot, losing a key player like Anzalone could potentially impact their championship aspirations. Bringing in Long would give the defense a chance to stay at a high level of play and enhance their Super Bowl chances.

A Smart and Low-Risk Move

Given the void left by Anzalone’s injury, signing David Long could be a smart move for the Lions. His pedigree, combined with the team’s current success and coaching staff, could help Long quickly acclimate and become a valuable contributor down the stretch. This could be a low-risk, high-reward opportunity that helps the Lions remain in contention for a Super Bowl run.
