Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has quickly become a key piece in Ben Johnson’s offense due to his tough, physical running style. Head coach Dan Campbell praised Montgomery’s team-first attitude and described him as a throwback to the running backs of the past.
During his Wednesday media session, Campbell noted that Montgomery’s running style is rare and reminiscent of older, more hard-nosed players. “To me, he’s a throwback,” Campbell said. “His running style is aggressive and downhill. He doesn’t let defenders bring him down easily. He keeps churning his legs and runs with a violent intensity, never giving up on a play.”
Montgomery’s ability to break tackles has made him a favorite of the offensive line, with Campbell comparing his determination to some of the NFL’s all-time greats. “When I watch him, it reminds me of guys like Earl Campbell and Walter Payton,” Campbell remarked. “Those guys wouldn’t go down, and David has that same mindset. He’s rare, and we’re lucky to have him.”
Campbell also emphasized how Montgomery’s style motivates the offensive line. “The O-line loves blocking for him, and anyone who plays with him gets inspired. That’s the kind of player you want on your team,” he added.
