New Era of Change in Vancouver
The BC Lions have ushered in a significant organizational shift, announcing two major decisions that could redefine the franchise’s future. On Wednesday, the Lions parted ways with Head Coach and Co-General Manager Rick Campbell while promoting Ryan Rigmaiden to the role of General Manager. Additionally, Neil McEvoy was named President of Football Operations after serving as Co-GM for the past four years.
“We thank Rick Campbell for playing a major role in bringing our franchise back to respectability and contention while navigating us through some very tough waters upon his arrival. He’s a great coach and a great friend,” said Lions President Duane Vienneau. “Our goal remains the same: to be in Grey Cup contention every year.”
Rick Campbell’s Tenure and Departure
Rick Campbell was brought on board in 2020, but his first season was canceled due to the pandemic. Over the next four seasons, Campbell’s Lions showed progress, achieving back-to-back 12-6 regular-season records in 2022 and 2023. However, each of those campaigns ended with defeats in the Western Finals.
The 2024 season saw a step backward as the Lions finished 9-9 and fell to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Western Semi-Final, a disappointment given the high expectations set by hosting the Grey Cup. The season was bolstered by owner Amar Doman’s significant financial support, including marquee signings like quarterback Nathan Rourke and defensive end Mathieu Betts.
“Our owner has given us all the tools we need to build this football team,” Vienneau explained. “I just don’t feel like we performed this year like we’ve performed in the last couple of years, and sometimes you have to make a change to get to that next level.”
Despite the disappointing conclusion to 2024, Campbell has already attracted interest from other teams, including the Edmonton Elks, who have received permission to interview him.
Vernon Adams Jr. Trade Talks Begin
In addition to Campbell’s departure, the Lions announced they are exploring trade options for quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. The seasoned playmaker started the 2024 season strong, amassing 2,395 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first seven games. However, his season was disrupted by an injury in Week 8, and while he returned for the playoffs, Adams’ performance fell short of expectations.
“We’re going to start making those phone calls literally tonight and gauge that market,” said newly appointed GM Ryan Rigmaiden. “He’s a tremendous quarterback. Anybody that isn’t firm on quarterback, I think, is going to want to at least have a conversation.”
While Adams has demonstrated his abilities, trading him might prove challenging given the league’s current quarterback depth and his hefty contract extension through 2026. Potential suitors may hesitate to offer significant trade assets, knowing the Lions are motivated by salary cap concerns.
A Fresh Vision for the Future
Ryan Rigmaiden steps into the role of General Manager with a robust resume, including stints as Assistant GM and Director of Player Personnel. His experience in the CFL and Arena Football League positions him well to lead the Lions into a new chapter.
As the Lions begin preparations for the 2025 season, they aim to rebuild and compete for the Grey Cup once again. With a revamped leadership structure and tough decisions on the horizon, the franchise hopes these changes will pave the way for sustained success.
