Kaevon Merriweather, a former safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quickly found a new opportunity after being released by the team. Just two days after his release, the Detroit Lions signed Merriweather to their practice squad on November 20, 2024. This move not only brings the Michigan native closer to home but also gives him a chance to play for a Super Bowl contender.

Merriweather first joined the Buccaneers in 2023 as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa. During his rookie season, he started two games and played in nine games during 2024, primarily contributing on special teams. His special teams experience could make him an immediate asset for the Lions, who are looking to strengthen their roster.

A product of Michigan, Merriweather grew up in Romulus and Belleville, where he was a star in both football and basketball. His athleticism and versatility helped him earn a spot at Iowa, where he played as a defensive back for four years. Over his college career, Merriweather totaled four interceptions, one forced fumble, and 118 tackles.

Merriweather’s return to Michigan holds special meaning, as he has long been a fan of the Detroit Lions. Born in Belleville in 1999, he witnessed much of the team’s struggles, including a decade-long stretch without a winning season from 2001 to 2011. Despite the Lions’ history of poor performance, Merriweather’s loyalty to the team remained strong.

The signing of Merriweather by the Lions could turn out to be a fortunate twist of fate for the safety. Although he was released by the Buccaneers, joining the Lions offers him the chance to play for a team with championship aspirations. Merriweather may find that losing his job in Tampa Bay leads to an even better opportunity in Detroit.

For Merriweather, the move to Detroit represents both a professional and personal milestone. As a Michigan native, joining the Lions allows him to play for the team he grew up supporting while competing for a chance to win a Super Bowl. His journey from an undrafted rookie to a contributor on a playoff-contending team is a testament to his resilience and determination.
