Holmes revamped the cornerbacks room by trading for Carlton Davis, signing Amik Robertson in free agency, and drafting Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. These moves have paid off, improving Detroit’s secondary significantly.
However, a potential issue looms in 2025, as Davis is set to hit free agency. If he departs, the Lions could turn to Rakestraw Jr., but his limited playing time this season makes him an unknown factor.
Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department suggests Detroit consider signing San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward, who is in the final year of his three-year, $40.5 million contract.
Ward would be a valuable addition for any team chasing a Super Bowl. A proven starter with extensive postseason experience, he’s played in Super Bowls with both the 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.
Ward, a 2023 Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro, has become one of the league’s top cornerbacks. In 2024, he’s allowing just a 55.9% completion rate and an 87.9 passer rating when targeted.
Turning 29 next May, Ward is expected to attract significant attention in free agency, likely commanding a lucrative contract.
If Davis isn’t re-signed, Detroit’s interest in Ward will hinge on their confidence in Rakestraw. If the rookie can step into a starting role in 2025, Ward may not be necessary, allowing the Lions to focus on depth.
But if doubts remain about Rakestraw’s readiness, Ward could become a prime target for Detroit.
